Earth Is Our Home
Hymn composed by
Cassie NortonContextual information
“Earth Is Our Home” is a song that Cassie Norton originally wrote to be sung by herself and her young climate activist friend, Neo Givord-Serrano (11 years old at the time) at the Climate Fast, Toronto event: “United Nations 2020 World Environment Day: Time for Nature, Biodiversity in the City.” Since then, she has adapted it many times to be sung by friends and students young and old, from all different backgrounds, in different languages and in different musical styles. Cassie is not attached to the original version. Instead, she offers the chorus, and structure as a launching pad for re-interpretations. The verses could be re-written and/or sung or rapped in different styles and languages depending on the needs of the community performing the song. The chorus included in this version is in English and French, but Cassie welcomes translation into other languages, as well as reinterpretation of meaning, as long as the understanding and communication that the Earth is our shared home, and not owned by anyone remains intact.

The earth it is our home, but it’s never been anyone’s to own.
We’re not alone, we share our home
With all the animals, the plants, and the trees.
We need them all, from big to small,
To fill our skies, our land, and our seas.
No one owns the earth our home.
Bees pollinate so that plants can grow
The food we eat from the seeds we sow.
Trees draw our waste into their leaves
And turn it into the air we breathe.
Down in the depths, the coral reefs
Protect the coasts from the storms at sea.
Up in the sky, the birds spread seeds
That grow into the trees we need to breathe.
On n’est pas seul, on partage le monde —
Tous les plantes, les arbres, les animaux.
On besoin de tous, de petite aux grand,
Pour le ciel, les terres, et les eaux.
We’re not alone, we share our home
With all the animals, the plants, and the trees.
We need them all, from big to small,
To fill our skies, our land, and our seas.
No one owns the earth our home.
Each species has a thing it does
We need, but we don’t know because
The web is wide; when you look inside
There’re connections hidden to the eye.
Our home has never been anyone’s to own.
We’re not alone, we share our home
With all the animals, the plants, and the trees.
We need them all, from big to small,
To fill our skies, our land, and our seas.
The earth it is our home, but it’s never been anyone’s to own.
