All Meters
What are these numbers?!? A hymn’s meter refers to the number of syllables in each line of text, with a decimal appearing between lines. Because some meters are very common in traditional hymnody, this allows musicians and worship leaders to interchange hymn texts with melodies.
An 8.8.8.8. meter is often written as LM (for “long meter”) and 8.6.8.6 meter as CM (for “common meter”).
“D” means double, so a hymn like “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee”--with a meter 8.7.8.7.D.--has lines containing, respectively, 8 syllables, 7 syllables, 8, 7, 8, 7, 8, and 7.
Here’s your pop quiz: after reading the above, what would “CMD” mean?
