Rise Up My People

Hymn composed by

Malila Hollow

Contextual information

“Rise Up My People” was written in response to the atrocious violence perpetrated by ICE under the Trump regime. The death of Renée Good and Alex Pretti sparked national outrage. However, it also created an intense counter-movement of protest and song, which is reflective of our country’s history of fighting for civil rights and public safety. The musical singing resistance—a way to lift up all voices and make our cries heard—functions in many ways to create change and healing in community. “Rise Up My People” was meant to spark movement, to inspire joy in action, and to provide an outlet for deep anger and grief. It can be sung as a congregational song, at a protest, or in an SATB arrangement for choir, with optional accompaniment.

Lyrics

Rise up my people;

Rise up my people, don’t be afraid.

Rise up to tell the truth for all:

There is no peace ’til justice rings out for everyone.

Lead us with love;

Lead us with love, don’t be afraid.

Lead us with love to shine the light.

There is no peace ’til justice rings out for everyone.

There is no peace,

There is no peace ’til justice rings out.

When there’s no peace, we’ll rise for all.

There is no peace ’til justice rings out for everyone.
