Tide is Rising, The

Hymn composed by

Shoshona Meira Friedman

Contextual information

Inspired by Gulf Shore Risings’ words “The seas are rising, so are we,” Rabbi Shoshana Meira Friedman and her husband Yotam Schachter co-wrote “The Tide Is Rising” in 2015. “Tide” quickly spread in the climate justice movement. It has been sung at protests, marches, blockades, conferences, worship services, and community gatherings. From Standing Rock to the People’s Climate March, from pipeline construction sites to holding cells in police stations, across oceans and at least three continents, Tide spreads a message of radical empowerment, devotion, and active hope as we fight for all we love. In 2025, Rabbi Shoshana’s expanded the song into a picture book. The Tide Is Rising, So Are We! A Climate Movement Anthem, illustrated by Kiki Kita and published by Beaming Books is available wherever books are sold.

Lyrics

The tide is rising, and so are we.

The tide is rising, and so are we.

The tide is rising, and so are we.

This is where we are called to be.

This is where we are called to be.

The task is mighty…

The land is Holy…

The storm is raging…

The sun is rising…

The world is ready…
